# How to change your plan
You can change your XFlow plan at any time. This article explains how billing works when you change plans, and how plan changes affect your recovered revenue and usage fees.
***
## How to upgrade or downgrade your plan
To change your plan:
1. Open **XFlow**.
2. Go to **Plans & Billing**.
3. Select the plan you'd like to switch to.
4. If you're **downgrading**, review the features that will be disabled and confirm the changes.
5. Approve the new subscription in Shopify.
Your new plan takes effect as soon as the subscription is approved.
If you downgrade, features not included in your new plan are disabled immediately. Your existing data is kept and becomes available again if you upgrade to a plan that includes those features.
## How plan changes affect recovered revenue and usage fees
Changing plans doesn't reset your recovered revenue or recalculate usage fees you've already incurred. Here's how recovered revenue and usage fees are affected in different plan change scenarios.
### Upgrade to a higher plan
When you upgrade, Shopify prorates your subscription based on the price difference and the remaining days in your billing cycle. Previously incurred usage fees remain unchanged. Future usage fees use your new plan's rate.
Example:
You've never subscribed to a paid plan before. You're currently on the **Free** plan with **$2,500** in recovered revenue and upgrade to **Growth**.
| Event | Recovered revenue | Plan | Usage fee |
| --------------------------------------- | -------------------- | -------------- | --------- |
| On Free | $2,500 | Free | $0 |
| Upgrade to Starter (7-day trial starts) | Counter resets to $0 | Growth (trial) | $0 |
| Recover $800 during the trial | $800 | Growth (trial) | $0 |
| Trial ends | $3,300 | Growth | $0 |
| Recovered revenue reaches $3,301 | $3,301 | Growth | +$7 |
**Summary**
* When you upgrade from the Free plan to trial paid plan, your recovered revenue counter resets to **$0**. Revenue generated on the Free plan is not carried over or billed.
* Revenue recovered during the 7-day trial is tracked but not billed. It remains in the Usage tracker after the trial ends.
* Your first usage fee is charged only after you exceed **$3,000** in recovered revenue after the trial.
Example:
You're on **Starter** with **$800** in recovered revenue and upgrade to **Growth**.
| Event | Recovered revenue | Plan | Usage fee |
| -------------------------------- | ----------------- | ------- | --------- |
| On Starter | $800 | Starter | $0 |
| Upgrade to Growth | $800 | Growth | $0 |
| Recovered revenue reaches $1,001 | $1,001 | Growth | $0 |
| Recovered revenue reaches $3,001 | $3,001 | Growth | +$5 |
**Summary**
* Your recovered revenue continues from **$800** after upgrading.
* No usage fee is charged immediately.
* Your first Growth usage fee is charged when your recovered revenue reaches **$3,001**
Example:
You're on **Starter** with **$1,500** in recovered revenue and already incurred 1 usage fee before upgrading to **Growth**.
| Event | Recovered revenue | Plan | Usage fee |
| -------------------------------- | ----------------- | ------- | --------- |
| Recovered revenue exceeds $1,000 | $1,001 | Starter | +$7 |
| Recovered revenue reaches $1,500 | $1,500 | Starter | — |
| Upgrade to Growth | $1,500 | Growth | $0 |
| Recovered revenue reaches $3,001 | $3,001 | Growth | +$5 |
| **Total usage fees incurred** | - | - | $12 |
**Summary**
* The **$7** usage fee charged on the Starter plan remains.
* Your recovered revenue continues from **$1,500** after upgrading.
* **Usage fees are cumulative.** After your recovered revenue reaches **$3,001**, another **$5** is charged under the Growth plan, bringing your total usage fees to **$12**.
Example:
You're on **Starter** with **$3,200** in recovered revenue and have already incurred three usage fees before upgrading to **Growth**.
| Event | Recovered revenue | Plan | Usage fee |
| -------------------------------- | ----------------- | ------- | --------- |
| Recovered revenue reaches $1,001 | $1,001 | Starter | +$7 |
| Recovered revenue reaches $2,001 | $2,001 | Starter | +$7 |
| Recovered revenue reaches $3,001 | $3,001 | Starter | +$7 |
| Upgrade to Growth | $3,200 | Growth | $0 |
| Recovered revenue reaches $4,001 | $4,001 | Growth | +$5 |
| Recovered revenue reaches $5,001 | $5,001 | Growth | +$5 |
| **Total usage fees incurred** | — | — | **$31** |
**Summary**
* Usage fees you've already incurred aren't refunded.
* Your recovered revenue continues from **$3,200**.
* Future usage fees follow your new plan's pricing. Each new usage fee is added to any previous usage fees
***Tip:** Upgrading earlier can reduce future usage fees. Once you switch plans, all future usage fees are calculated using your new plan's pricing — previously incurred usage fees remain unchanged.*
### Downgrade to a lower plan
Downgrading changes how future usage fees are calculated, but it doesn't affect your existing billing history. Any usage fees you've already incurred remain on your bill, while future billing milestones follow your new plan.
Example:
You're on **Growth** with **$800** in recovered revenue and downgrade to **Starter**.
| Event | Recovered revenue | Plan | Usage fee |
| -------------------------------- | ----------------- | ------- | --------- |
| On Growth | $800 | Growth | $0 |
| Downgrade to Starter | $800 | Starter | $0 |
| Recovered revenue reaches $1,001 | $1,001 | Starter | +$7 |
| **Total usage fees incurred** | — | — | **$7** |
**Summary**
* Downgrading doesn't reset your recovered revenue, which continues from **$800**.
* No usage fee is charged when you downgrade.
* Future usage fees follow the **Starter** plan's pricing.
* Your first Starter usage fee is charged when your recovered revenue reaches $1,001, instead of $3,001 on the Growth plan.
Example:
You're on **Growth** with **$3,200** in recovered revenue and downgrade to **Starter**.
| Event | Recovered revenue | Plan | Usage fee |
| -------------------------------- | ----------------- | ------- | --------- |
| Recovered revenue reaches $3,001 | $3,001 | Growth | +$5 |
| Downgrade to Starter | $3,200 | Starter | $0 |
| Recovered revenue reaches $4,001 | $4,001 | Starter | +$7 |
| Recovered revenue reaches $5,001 | $5,001 | Starter | +$7 |
| **Total usage fees incurred** | — | — | **$19** |
**Summary**
* Your recovered revenue continues from **$3,200**.
* Future usage fees follow the **Starter** plan's pricing. Each new usage fee is added to any previous usage fees
*Downgrading to a lower plan may increase future usage fees because each plan has its own usage fee pricing.*
Example:
You're on **Growth** with **$3,200** in recovered revenue and downgrade to **Free**.
| Event | Recovered revenue | Plan | Usage fee |
| -------------------------------------------------------- | ----------------- | ------ | ----------------------------------------------------- |
| Recovered revenue reaches $3,001 | $3,001 | Growth | +$5 |
| Downgrade to Free (5 free recovered orders already used) | $3,200 | Free | $0
Workflows assigned to active campaigns pause |
| Recovered revenue continues to grow | $5,800 | Free | $0 |
| **Total usage fees incurred** | — | — | **$5** |
**Summary**
* Downgrading to the Free plan stops future usage fees.
* If you've already used all **5 free recovered orders**, your workflows assigned to active campaigns are automatically pause until you upgrade.
* The **$5** usage fee incurred before downgrading remains unchanged, so your **total usage fees incurred are $5**.
Example:
You start on **Starter**, upgrade to **Growth**, downgrade to **Free**, then upgrade back to **Growth** in the same billing cycle.
| Event | Recovered revenue | Plan | Usage fee |
| -------------------------------------------------------- | ----------------- | ------- | ----------------------------------------------------- |
| Recovered revenue reaches $3,001 | $3,001 | Growth | +$5 |
| Downgrade to Free (5 free recovered orders already used) | $3,200 | Free | $0
Workflows assigned to active campaigns pause |
| Recovered revenue continues to grow | $5,800 | Free | $0 |
| Upgrade back to Starter | $5,800 | Starter | $0 |
| Recovered revenue reaches $6,001 | $6,001 | Starter | +$7 |
| Recovered revenue reaches $7,001 | $7,001 | Starter | +$7 |
| **Total usage fees incurred** | — | — | **$19** |
**Summary**
* Downgrading to the Free plan stops all future usage fees.
* Since all **5 free recovered orders** have already been used, your workflows assigned to active campaigns are pause immediately after you downgrade.
* Your recovered revenue continues from **$3,200** and isn't reset.
* When you upgrade back to a paid plan, billing resumes at the next eligible billing milestone using your current plan's pricing.
### Multiple plan changes in the same billing cycle
Changing plans multiple times in the same billing cycle doesn't restart billing. Your recovered revenue continues from its current amount, and each billing milestone is charged only once based on the plan you're on when that milestone is reached.
Example:
You're on **Growth** with **$2,500** in recovered revenue. You downgrade to **Starter**, then upgrade back to **Growth** before reaching the next Growth billing milestone.
| Event | Recovered revenue | Plan | Usage fee |
| -------------------------------- | ----------------- | ------- | --------- |
| On Growth | $2,500 | Growth | $0 |
| Downgrade to Starter | $2,500 | Starter | $0 |
| Recovered revenue reaches $3,001 | $3,001 | Starter | +$7 |
| Upgrade back to Growth | $3,200 | Growth | $0 |
| Recovered revenue reaches $4,001 | $4,001 | Growth | +$5 |
| **Total usage fees incurred** | — | — | **$12** |
**Summary**
* Usage fees are based on the plan you're using when each billing milestone is reached.
* Previously incurred usage fees remain unchanged.
Example:
You upgrade to **Starter**, later downgrade to **Free**, and now upgrade to **Growth**. Your recovered revenue is **$1,800** when you upgrade from the Free plan.
| Event | Recovered revenue | Plan | Usage fee |
| -------------------------------------------------------- | ----------------- | ------- | ---------------------------------------------------- |
| Upgrade from Free to Starter | $1,800 | Starter | $0 |
| Recovered revenue reaches $2,001 | $2,001 | Starter | +$7 |
| Recovered revenue reaches $3,001 | $3,001 | Starter | +$7 |
| Downgrade to Free (5 free recovered orders already used) | $3,001 | Free | $0
Workflows assigned to active campaigns pause |
| Upgrade to Growth | $3,001 | Growth | $0 |
| Recovered revenue reaches $5,001 | $5,001 | Growth | +$5 |
| **Total usage fees incurred** | — | — | **$19** |
**Summary**
* Downgrading to the Free plan stops future usage fees.
* Your recovered revenue continues from its current value and isn't reset.
* When you upgrade to Growth, billing resumes at the next Growth billing milestone.
### Month reset
At the beginning of each new month, your recovered revenue resets to **$0**. Usage fees from the previous month are finalised and do not carry over. Billing for the new month starts from **$0** based on your current plan.
Example:
You're on the **Growth** plan. By the end of July, your recovered revenue reaches **$5,200**, and you've already incurred **$10** in usage fees.
| Event | Recovered revenue | Plan | Usage fee |
| -------------------------------------- | ----------------- | ------ | -------------------- |
| End of July | $5,200 | Growth | $10 total this month |
| August 1 (new billing cycle) | Resets to $0 | Growth | $0 |
| Recovered revenue reaches $3,001 | $3,001 | Growth | +$5 |
| **Total usage fees incurred (August)** | — | — | **$5** |
**Summary**
* Your monthly recovered revenue resets to **$0** at the beginning of each new month.
* Usage fees from the previous month are finalized and aren't carried over.
* At the beginning of each new month, billing restarts based on your current plan.
Example:
You were on the **Free** plan throughout July with **$1,200** in recovered revenue. On **August 3**, you upgrade to **Growth** for the first time, so your **7-day free trial** begins.
| Event | Recovered revenue | Plan | Usage fee |
| --------------------------------------------- | ------------------------------------- | -------------- | --------- |
| End of July (Free) | $1,200 (5 free recovered orders used) | Free | $0 |

| **Total usage fees incurred** | — | — | **$5** |
**Summary**

* When you upgrade from Free to Growth for the first time, your recovered revenue counter resets to **$0**, and your 7-day free trial begins.
* Revenue recovered during the trial is tracked but is **not billed**.
* When the trial ends, usage fees are calculated based on your selected plan and the recovered revenue carried over from the trial.
* Your first Growth usage fee is charged when recovered revenue reaches **$3,001** after the trial.
Example:
You start the month on **Starter**. Mid-month, you upgrade to **Growth**. At the end of the month, your recovered revenue reaches **$4,500**.
| Event | Recovered revenue | Plan | Usage fee |
| ------------------------------------------------- | ---------------------------- | ------- | -------------------- |
| Recovered revenue reaches $1,001 | $1,001 | Starter | +$7 |
| Upgrade to Growth | $2,000 | Growth | $0 |
| Recovered revenue reaches $3,001 | $3,001 | Growth | +$5 |
| Recovered revenue reaches $4,001 | $4,001 | Growth | +$5 |
| End of month | $4,500 | Growth | $17 total this month |
| First day of next month | Billing counter resets to $0 | Growth | $0 |
| Recovered revenue reaches $3,001 | $3,001 | Growth | +$5 |
| **Total usage fees incurred (new billing cycle)** | — | — | **$5** |
**Summary**
* Usage fees incurred before the month ends are finalized and aren't carried over.
* At the beginning of each new month, your billing counter resets to $0.
* In the new month, your subscription remains on the Growth plan, and the monthly fee is charged at the Growth plan rate.
## Best practices
**Upgrade before you reach your next billing milestone**
If your recovered revenue is close to your plan's next billing milestone, consider upgrading **before** you reach it. The next usage fee is calculated using the plan that's active when the milestone is reached, so upgrading earlier may lower your next usage fee.
**Upgrade early if you expect a high-revenue month**
If you're planning a product launch, promotion, or seasonal sale, consider upgrading at the **beginning of your billing cycle**. This gives you the full benefit of your new plan throughout the month and may reduce the number of higher usage fees you incur.
**Don't downgrade to Free if you rely on active workflows**
If you've already used all **5 free recovered orders**, your workflows assigned to active campaigns pause immediately after downgrading to the Free plan. Upgrade to a paid plan before you need your automations to continue running.
## FAQs
**Does changing plans reset my recovered revenue?**
No. Changing plans doesn't reset your recovered revenue. It continues from its current value regardless of whether you upgrade or downgrade.
**Are usage fees I've already incurred refunded if I change plans?**
No. Usage fees you've already incurred aren't refunded or recalculated. Only future usage fees follow your new plan's pricing.
**What happens if I downgrade to the Free plan?**
Future usage fees stop while you're on the Free plan. If you've already used all 5 free recovered orders, your workflows assigned to active campaigns pause until you upgrade to a paid plan.
**Does the 7-day free trial reset my recovered revenue?**
No. Recovered revenue generated during your 7-day free trial is tracked in your Usage tracker but isn't billed while the trial is active.
When the trial ends, your Usage tracker **does not reset**. The recovered revenue from the trial carries over into your paid subscription and counts toward your plan's included usage allowance. Any applicable usage fees are calculated only after your paid subscription begins, based on your selected plan.
**Does my monthly billing cycle reset my recovered revenue?**
It depends on your plan:
* **Paid plans:** Your monthly billing counter resets to $0 on the first day of each month.
* **Free plan:** Your 5 free recovered orders don't reset each month. They continue from their current usage until you upgrade.
* **Free to trial:** When you upgrade from the Free plan and start your free trial, your recovered revenue counter resets to **$0**.
