# Update Motrix theme New versions of Motrix bring features, fixes, and design improvements. Updating adds the new version to your draft themes as a copy, with your customizations carried across — your live store stays exactly as it is until you publish. ### Before you start Code changes aren't carried into the updated version. If you or a developer has edited theme files, save a copy before you update — there's no way to recover changes you didn't keep. ## Check your version 1. From your Shopify admin, go to **Online Store**. 2. Click the version number under the Motrix theme. If you're current, you'll see **This theme is up to date**. ![](https://docs-assets.foxecom.app/documentation/a876ded5-d1e1-492a-9b70-1f5d33111ccd.png) If not, a notification replaces the version number. Version numbers show for your published theme and every theme in **Draft themes**. ![](https://docs-assets.foxecom.app/documentation/534b9c53-f5fb-4925-8c5b-9ad318fb2ac5.png) ## Update to the new version 1. From your Shopify admin, go to **Online Store**. 2. Click the update notification on the Motrix theme. 3. Click **View release notes** to see what changed. 4. Click **Update**. 5. Wait for the copy to finish — larger themes take a few minutes. ### What carries over Everything you did in the theme editor comes with the update: * Theme settings * Page layouts — sections and blocks you added, reordered, removed, or hid * Section and block settings, including images, videos, text, and dynamic sources * Templates you created * App embeds and app extensions, with their settings * Wording changes made in the theme content editor ### What doesn't **Code changes.** Anything edited directly in the theme files stays behind in the old version — your own edits and any an app made on your behalf. Copy them into the updated theme by hand before publishing. Custom CSS needs checking as well as copying. If a class name changed between versions, your CSS pastes across fine and still does nothing. ## Review before publishing The updated copy is a draft. Check it before it goes live. 1. On the **Updated copy of Motrix** card, click **Review**. 2. Walk through your key pages — homepage, a collection page, a product page, cart. 3. Check any page that uses a template you created. 4. Test the apps that appear on your storefront. 5. When you're happy, click **Publish**. Apps aren't guaranteed to work with a new theme version. Check anything that injects content into your storefront, and contact the app developer if something looks wrong. ## No update notification? If Motrix doesn't offer **Add to draft themes**, the standard update isn't available for your copy. The two usual causes: * **The theme was uploaded from a ZIP file.** Uploaded themes never receive updates, however they got there. A copy bought for one store and uploaded to another is also unlicensed and has to be repurchased from the Theme Store to become eligible. * **Code customizations conflict** with Shopify's update process. You can still move to the latest version — it just has to be done by hand. 1. From your Shopify admin, go to **Online Store > Themes**. 2. On your current theme, open the **⋯** menu and select **Duplicate**. 3. Rename the duplicate so you can recognize it later. This is your fallback if anything goes wrong. 1. Go to the **Motrix** page on the Shopify Theme Store. 2. Click **Add a new copy** to add the current version to your store. 1. On your **old** theme, click **⋯ > Edit code**. 2. Copy these files and paste them into the same folders in the new version: * every edited JSON file in the **Templates** folder * `settings_data.json` in the **Config** folder 3. Re-create any custom templates. They won't exist in the new copy, so make them first, then paste their JSON in. Copy your custom code across too. Anything you or a developer changed in the theme files stays behind in the old version. Apps that add code to theme files need reconnecting to the new version. Whether removing and re-adding the app is enough varies by app — check the app's documentation, or contact its developer. Walk through your key pages on the new copy before publishing, the same as any update. ## Automated updates Shopify applies some updates to Motrix for you. These are bug and security fixes only — they don't change how your store looks or touch your content and settings. You'll see a notification in your admin, and you can read what changed under **View release notes**. ## FAQs #### Will I lose my customizations? Everything set in the theme editor carries over, including any templates you created. Code edits don't — copy those across by hand from your backup. #### Does updating change my live store? Not until you publish. The update arrives as a draft copy, so shoppers keep seeing your current version while you review the new one. #### Why don't I see an update option for my theme? Either the theme was uploaded from a file rather than installed from the Theme Store, or code customizations are conflicting with Shopify's update process. See [No update notification?](https://docs.foxecom.com/motrix-theme/getting-started/update-motrix-theme#no-update-notification) above for the manual route. #### The update failed. Why? Occasionally a change to the theme's structure between versions stops the copy from completing. Try again, and if it keeps failing, contact our support team with your store URL and theme version.
